IRT Wiseman - Oh I see. Yeah, they usually only use around 4 planes in games like Sonic 3&K, and i guess thats all you need for single player.
What are you working on that requires parallax scrolling?
Ive decided, Halo 2 is definately the best looking console game to date - im absolutely astonished at the effort that went into the texturing, effects and physics throughout single-player. Sadly, there is a fair amount of pop-up, even in cut-scenes, which shows that perhaps Bungie got a little too ambitious. While this game's showing the Xbox's graphical limitations, it still runs at a solid 60fps, and the gameplay remains intact.

They have used the 12 of them for the water surface, pseudo-3D animations (Icecap act 2), and other parts; most stages have 5 or 6, simpler areas have 3, and the simplest stage (Death Egg, guess they ran out of time) has just 2 and the bottom one is static.

I have such fond memories of that game. Ive got to find a copy of Sonic Mega Collection for the GC, or better yet, Sonic Jam.

IRT Cata: I wanted to refresh my memory on its great parallax scrolling (the game handles up to 12 planes). I wanted to see how did they use them, what features did each plane have (like animations, tiling, automatic scrolling, etc.), and get some ideas on how to use so many planes, because the parallax functions I'm working on will handle up to 33 planes by default, and many more if you recompile another library. Of course you can't possibly want to handle so many planes, but the Sonic Team seem to have achieved 12 successfully, and if you do 4? split screen with 12 planes that's 48 planes to use.

Oh, in case anyone is concerned about the popups during cutscenes, it's because they are loading the level under the cutscenes. It's so we don't have any load times.

IRT Cata: I suggest ROM dump from your carts + Gens + 2xSaI for high-res gaming, it really improves the graphics.
